While eBook sales continue to increase around the world, the actual layout and presentation of eBooks is in a sorry state. Mangled formatting, defective images, and non-reflowable content are just a few symptoms of the problem. However, poor sales and poor reviews from readers suggests otherwise.

The eBook Design and Development Guide is a technical reference for serious publishers and authors who want to produce professional eBooks with a focus on quality. This guide provides all the technical knowledge of HTML, CSS, EPUB, XML, and Gen that is necessary to create your eBook from a source manuscript into an eBook ready for sale at all the major eBook vendors, including the , Barnes & Noble Nook, Kobo, and the iBookstore.

This book more than paid for itself the second I opened it! I was using inDesign CS5.5 to create ePub e-books and getting numerous errors that I just couldn't track down.
Looking in this book, immediately I recognized that first major error I was getting due to the way inDesign CS5.5 was generating code was because it was adding a space at one part of the DOCTYPE html code in the header that was causing every single page to have an error and no e-book readers could even read it!
As I came to learn, not only was inDesign CS5.5 creating numerous coding errors, but it also had a lot of omissions of things you'd want to include.
This book helped me understand the exact structure of ePub and MOBI eBooks. What every single folder and file does and how to deal with it. I learned the differences needed for coding ePub vs. MOBI eBooks, how to optimize for each platform, and this book even provides boilerplate templates for each.
I learned how to add and/or correct the things that inDesign CS5.5 was getting wrong and/or omitting.
Ultimately, because I already was well-versed in both HTML and CSS, this gave me a complete understanding of how I could customize eBooks apart from what could be generated out of inDesign CS5.5. This explains what code that ePub 2.0 and ePub 3 supports, and even the various Kindle readers and what they support. It makes it easy to determine what HTML and CSS code to avoid in order to create the widest compatibility.
If you are going to be creating e-books in any way, through any software or even hand-coding, this book is the must-have reference to assist you through that process in getting successful results.

The eBook Design and Development Guide edition by Paul Salvette Arts Photography eBooks Reviews

If you want to learn how to format your own ebooks, this is an excellent, easy-to-use guide. It explains how ebook files work, and why they're different from fixed-format files (such as print/PDF), demonstrates the different coding and other techniques you need to create an ebook, then walks you step by step through the process, from creating a clean source file to putting those extra nice professional-looking touches on your book, to creating the entire epub by hand. I already knew a lot of HTML before going in (that probably helps; I can't judge how easy Mr. Salvette's HTML instructions are for people who are completely unfamiliar with HTML, but I taught myself HTML years ago so it can't be that hard), but I was never able to grasp CSS until I read the explanation in this book. By following the instructions I was able to create a beautiful, professional-looking ebook file.

I did go down to flaming defeat when it came to creating the rest of the epub by hand. (An ebook consists of the actual book file, and then a set of other specialized files that tell the ereading device what to do with the book file.) The instructions are clear; the problem seemed to be that I'm inept with the command-line program needed to complete the final step of the process. But I got good results by running my ebook file through a free software program called Sigil, so it worked out fine in the end.

The book also comes with links to a vast number of helpful resources on Mr. Salvette's site (he and his wife also have an ebook formatting business) including copy-and-paste boilerplate code and lots of other goodies for Do It Yourself ebook formatters. It adds greatly to the value of the book.

I highly recommend this book for independent authors and anyone else who wants to be able to create beautiful, functional ebooks themselves.
Coding is not my thing. Despite that, this book guided me through the process of creating my own ebook–neat, clean and professional. The book is broken up into two major parts first, the author walks you through the basics of coding in the context of ebook content and creation; second, he takes you through everything a second time, but with step by step instructions on how to create an ebook. Included is an array of appendices with sample code–which the author encourages you to use. Also scattered throughout the guide are a host of online resources and programs you can use to create your ebook and check your work along the way.

My first attempt at an ebook included a Word conversion to html and the subsequent "frankenstein"ing done by 's conversion tools. That was awful, and after a while, a little embarrassing. This guide was the remedy! With a newly created version, I now have an ebook I can be proud of.The Divide A 2700 Mile Search For Answers
